چکیده

I M P R O V I N G the utilization of urea nitrogen by ruminants has been the goal of many investigations. One approach, as exemplified by the study of Karr et al. (1965), has involved the addition of certain feedstuffs, which are thought to be sources of "rumen stimulatory" factors, to the diet with the hope of increasing microbial protein synthesis. Two examples of such feedstuffs are corn distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) and dehydrated alfalfa meal (DEHY). Much work has been conducted with the objective of identifying and/or obtaining information relative to some of the physical and chemical properties of the "rumen stimulatory" factor or factors in DDGS (Little et al., 1964; Potter et al., 1966; Little et al., 1967) and D E H Y (Burroughs et al., 1950). The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of adding DDGS or DEHY to high-urea diets on the utilization of urea nitrogen by beef cattle.

Evaluation of Corn and Sorghum Distillers Byproducts1

Two trials were conducted to determine the feeding value of sorghum distillers byproducts. Trial 1, a finishing trial, used 160 yearling steers (327 kg). Treatments consisted of dry-rolled corn (DRC) control, sorghum wet distillers grains (SWDG), sorghum wet distillers grains plus solubles (SWDGS), and sorghum dried distillers grain plus solubles (SDDGS). Distillers byproducts were fed at 40% o...

Characteristics of Beef Finished on Wet Distillers Grains with Varying Types and Levels of Roughage

Beef knuckles (n = 160) were obtained from source-verified cattle finished on 30% wet distillers grains plus solubles enriched with varying levels of alfalfa hay, corn silage, or corn stalks based on NDF. Our objectives were to determine if roughage inclusion, in conjunction with wet distillers grains plus solubles and cattle location affects beef flavor. Data from this study indicate type and ...

Distillers grains as an energy source and effect of drying on protein availability

The use of distillers byproducts as energy sources would expand the market for these byproducts. Drying of these byproducts may produce changes that affect the nutritional value. A series of experiments was conducted to evaluate distillers byproducts as an energy source for finishing cattle and to compare wet vs. dried byproducts. The energy value of wet distillers byproducts was 132 to 174% th...

Productive Performance of Laying Hens Fed Different Levels of Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles with or without Certain Feed Additives

The objective of this work was to evaluate the inclusion of distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) as substitution for soybean meal in Hisex Brown laying hen diets with or without enzyme or vitamin E supplementation on productive performance. A total number of 180 Hisex Brown laying hens at 26 weeks of age were randomly divided into 15 treatment groups in a 5 × 3 factorial design experime...

Land usage attributed to corn ethanol production in the United States: sensitivity to technological advances in corn grain yield, ethanol conversion, and co-product utilization

BACKGROUND Although the system for producing yellow corn grain is well established in the US, its role among other biofeedstock alternatives to petroleum-based energy sources has to be balanced with its predominant purpose for food and feed as well as economics, land use, and environmental stewardship. We model land usage attributed to corn ethanol production in the US to evaluate the effects o...
